Get the Facts

65% of Americans are overweight, and about half of that number are obese.  The number of kids in the US who are obese is pushing 20%. Leave it to our great nation, however, to find a way to turn this lifestyle-induced risk factor for health problems too numerous to count into a veritable goldmine. The medical industry received 147 billion dollars for weight-related medical bills in 2008, according to researchers at Emory University. The diet and fitness industry alone makes 40 billion annually…that’s 40,000,000,000 dollars… on products and services that, for the most part, don’t work. Sure, people try the next diet shake, the miracle pill, the shiny new piece of exercise equipment and in that first burst of enthusiasm, lose some weight. But for 90% of folks who do manage to lose weight in a few months the pounds are back, and they often brings friends.

Do not despair! Although these numbers are daunting, take heart! You have the power to shape your own destiny by the choices you make every day. Check out one of the longest running research programs on SUCCESSFUL long-term weight loss, the National Weight Control (get it? control?) Registry for details on thousands of people who refuse to give in to a culture that actively promotes obesity.

Then get up and go for a walk in nature with your family and friends! Have a lovely long weekend, all.
